Awesome Totally Awesome Megan Thee Stallion

Make Way for Megan Thee Stallion

I don’t think anyone can say that there isn’t a serious demand for more female rappers with the success of Cardi B and Nicki Minaj setting the stage for growth in the industry. Personally, I hope to see Megan Thee Stallion be one of the next ones to start dominating the charts. Her unapologetic lyrics and ownership of her physical space and sexuality as a woman couldn’t be more important given the current political landscape – while some may find it slutty, I think the better word is empowering. There is no doubt in my mind that she can hold her own against hip-hop heavyweights, male or female, with her raw energy, Southern drawl, and unwavering confidence.

First, let’s address the elephant in the room which is probably the largest barrier to garnering a wider audience – her overtly sexual lyrics and appearance. This has been an uphill battle for many of hip hop’s greatest female entertainers while it rarely has an effect, and is often encouraged, for male artists. Now, I’m not saying that the greats like Lil’ Kim, Nicki Minaj, and Cardi B don’t have the freedom to express themselves sexually on their records, which they absolutely do, but it is harder for people to accept and is usually judged much more harshly. I believe slut-shaming even applies here. Megan Thee Stallion’s music is rampant with explicit lyrics – yes, but, she’s not apologizing and she has plenty more to offer. This is apparent through all of her music, starting with the song that garnered her much of the attention she’s received over the last year, “Stalli Freestyle”.

Her dominating presence is, to me, inspiring. In an industry overrun by men, and their egos, the next rising star will have to kick, bite, and claw her way to the top. In my opinion, Megan Thee Stallion is the woman for the job. Like many female artists before her, her songs are rougher, both in sound and content. However, it rings true to Southern rap and is honestly refreshing when compared to the watered down and even numb music we’re being fed on our airways much of the time. Listening to her recent album, “Tina Montana” which was released earlier this year, I can’t help but find similarities between her music and that of T.I. and other iconic Southern rappers we’ve all loved. While it’s easy to draw comparisons between female rappers because there are so few who stand out from the crowd, I would liken her to another queen of the South, Trina.

Not only does she have the attitude of a rap icon in the making, but she also has the bars to make it. Megan has been writing her own raps since she was 14 years old and consistently delivers verses that are sure to match anyone currently making the charts. I predict that Megan Thee Stallion is the female artist to watch as we enter into 2019. Check out the video for her EP’s titular song and my personal favorite, “Tina Montana”, to see what all of the much-warranted fuss is about.

Santa Clarita Diet: Abby’s Guide to Surviving Her Flesh Eating Mom

Season 2 of Santa Clarita Diet has finally arrived. When we last left the not-so-heroic heroes of our story, they had basically messed up everything. To be fair, poor Sheila did randomly turn into a zombie with no explanation as to why (can we get to that part of the story, please?), which is enough to make any family a little crazy.

UnSpotified: We Revisit De La Soul's Unstreamed Masterpiece, Buhloone Mindstate

This group doesn’t talk about how financially solvent they are. They talk about being late on their rent. They talk about letting their parents down and missing them. They talk about letting their friends down. They talk about not judging others who have made different choices. And when Dave says, “I’m the greatest MC in the world,” it’s ironic, it’s self-deprecating.
